Getting started · Chapter 4
nexdiary on your phone
nexdiary is a web app. You will not find it in the App Store or on Google Play, but you can put it on your home screen from the browser. It then opens without the browser bar like any other app, and a note takes two taps.
Putting it on the home screen
- Open nexdiary in the browser
Ideally at the https address you otherwise use for nexdiary, and sign in there. Leave “Stay signed in on this device” ticked, and you stay signed in until you have been away for 30 days.
- On an iPhone
In Safari tap Share, then “Add to Home Screen”.
- On Android
In the browser's menu choose the item that puts the page on the home screen or installs it as an app. What it is called depends on the browser. nexdiary has no button of its own for this.
- Open it from the icon
From now on you open nexdiary from the new icon. It is called “nexdiary” and shows the quill.
Straight into the text field
When you open nexdiary on your phone, you land in the quick note. It is a single field, “Jot it down …”, with the keyboard already open. Above it are today's notes, your streak and the question of the day, and nothing else.
“All” at the top right leads into the whole app. Below the notes, “Write the day up” takes you to “Today” in the evening, where the page is written. The camera to the left of the field takes a photo for the next note. Tap the question above the field, and your next note becomes the answer to it.
The quick note comes once per visit. If you would rather start on “Today”, switch off “Start with the quick note” under “My account”, “Look” tab, card “On the phone”. It stays within reach all the same, through the pen at the top right, “Quick note”.
Two shortcuts
- A shortcut to the quick note. Press and hold the nexdiary icon and the phone offers a shortcut that opens the quick note directly. This works on phones that know shortcuts for web apps, many Android phones among them.
- Sharing to nexdiary. In Android browsers that can share to web apps, nexdiary shows up in the list when you tap Share in another app. A text or a link then lands in the field of the quick note, and you send it yourself. Photos cannot be shared in this way. To add a photo, use the camera next to the field.
What is different on a phone
- A bar with five items sits at the bottom. “Photos” lives in the account button at the top right.
- While you write, the bar disappears and “Save” stays above the keyboard.
- You take a photo straight with the camera or pick one from the phone's pictures.
- Notifications for reminders and time capsules are switched on per device, under “My account”, “Reminders” tab, with “Turn on for this device”. On an iPhone this only works from the app on the home screen, from iOS 16.4. More in the chapter Reminders.
- Nothing works without a connection to the server. nexdiary keeps nothing on the phone, and a note goes straight to your server.
Good to knowNotifications need an address with https. At a plain home network address without https they stay off, though the app itself works.
