Writing · Chapter 10

Locking or deleting a day

Some days should stay just as they are. You can lock a day for good, and after that nobody changes it any more, not even you. And a page that no longer fits can be deleted without losing your notes.

Locking a day

A locked day can never be changed or deleted again, not by you and not by the operator. Its text, title, tags, values, cover, notes and photos stay exactly as they are at that moment. This is not a lock in the interface that could be got round, but one in the database. You can still read it, share it and print it in the book.

  1. Open the day

Tap the day in the journal. At the top you find “Edit”, “Lock for good”, “Delete page” and “Share”. The writing view has the button with the padlock too.

  2. Tap “Lock for good”

If you have changed something in the writing view, save it first. Until then the day cannot be locked.

  3. Confirm

The window “Lock this day for good?” says once more what it means. To confirm, type the word “lock” and press “Lock for good”.

Journal
A written day on a computer: at the top Journal and the buttons Edit, Lock for good, Delete page and Share, below an autumn photo as the cover with the buttons Framing and Change cover, the date and the title A good Monday
The buttons at the top of every finished page.

Afterwards the day shows “Locked on …” with the date, and a small padlock marks it in the journal. Only days that already have a page can be locked. Only deleting the whole account still takes a locked day with it, and only the operator can delete an account.

Deleting a page

Deleting is less final than it sounds, because your notes stay.

  1. Tap “Delete page”

The button is at the top of the day and in the writing view.

  2. Read what will be lost

The window “Delete the page?” lists what goes. If the day is shared, it also says who will no longer see it.

  3. Confirm

    “Delete” deletes the page.

Gone then are the title, text, tags and values of the day. Your notes and the photos of the day stay, and only pictures you uploaded just for the text go with it. nexdiary reports “Page deleted. Your notes are still there.”, and you can write a new page from the notes at any time.

A shared day is no longer visible to anybody as soon as its page is deleted. A locked day cannot be deleted.

What there is not

There is no bin for deleted pages. A page could only be brought back from an older backup, and that resets the whole server, for everybody. Members cannot delete their own account either, that is left to the operator.

Good to knowLocking suits days you want to keep exactly as you wrote them back then. If you are unsure, wait a few days. You can lock at any time, but you can never undo it.
