Remembering and sharing · Chapter 15
Sharing a day
Your diary belongs to you alone. Sometimes, though, you want to show a day: the trip to the lake to Paul, the page about Mia's first day at school to Ruth. For that you share exactly that one day with exactly the people you choose. Everything else stays with you, and you can take it back at any time.
Sharing a day
- Open the day
Tap the day under “Journal”. Any day with a page can be shared, a locked one too.
- Press “Share”
The button sits at the top, above the cover. “Share this day” opens with every other account on your server. From eight people on, the field “Find a person” helps.
- Choose people
Tap one or more people. Below, it asks “What does Paul see?”, or with several “What does the family see?”.
- Decide what goes along
“Text and photos” always go. “Your values (mood, health …)” and “Your notes from that day” are off; switch them on if they should go too. That then holds for everybody you chose.
- “Share”
nexdiary confirms with “Shared with Paul.” The page of the day now says “Shared with” and the people, instead of “Only for you”.
If your cover is a photo from your notes, the window tells you: “The cover is a photo from your notes and is shown too.” If nobody but you uses nexdiary on your server yet, there is nobody to choose. How to bring the family in is in the chapter Inviting.
What the others see
Whoever is given a day finds it under “Shared”, in “Shared with me”. A counter on “Shared” in the bar shows how many are new. No message reaches the phone for it.
Nothing is copied when you share. Whoever reads sees the day as it is right now: change a sentence later, and Paul sees the new sentence. Reading is all the others can do. There are no comments, and nobody can pass on a day that is not theirs.
Sending a heart
The only reply to a shared day is a heart. Below the day sits “Send a heart”, with the note “A quiet sign that you have read it. Nothing more.” A second tap takes it back. Whoever shared the day sees it on the day's page: next to “Shared with”, the person's picture wears a small heart, and if you point at it with the mouse, it says “Paul sent a heart”. No message comes for this either; you see it the next time you open the day.
Taking it back
- For one person: open the day, press “Share”, take the person out of the choice and press “Share” again.
- For everybody: take everybody out, and the button reads “Stop sharing”. Or go to “Shared”, “Shared by me” and press “Stop sharing” next to the day.
It takes effect at once. If you delete a day's page, it is no longer shared either. If an account is blocked, it disappears from everything that was shared with it.
Good to knowValues and notes are the most personal part of a day. Share them only if you are happy for someone to read what you jotted down just for yourself.
