NEXDIARY

Account and running it · Chapter 19

Your account

Everything that concerns only you is under “My account”. You reach it through the round account button with your picture, at the bottom of the sidebar on a computer, top right on a phone. What you set there holds for your account on every device. The others in the family set up theirs themselves.

Profile

“Upload a picture” sets a photo from your phone or camera as your picture. nexdiary cuts it to a square and keeps only the picture itself, no place and no device. It is visible to every account on your server.

The “Display name” is the name the others see you by, say “Mum” instead of “jule”. Left empty, nexdiary shows your user name, which is also what you keep signing in with. Below stand name, role and email. A mail address comes from an invitation or from the sign-in provider; it cannot be changed here.

In the card “Language” you choose Deutsch or English, and any language your operator has added. It holds for your account in every browser.

Security

Five cards sit here, one below the other.

  • Password: “Current password”, “New password”, “Once more”, then “Change password”. At least twelve characters. After that, every other device of yours is signed out.
  • Second factor: shows whether it is on and how many recovery codes are left. “New recovery codes” makes a fresh set of eight, and the old ones stop working. “Turn off” works only when your operator does not require the second factor for everybody, or when you also have a passkey; out of the box they do require it.
  • Passkeys: sign in with your fingerprint, face or the device's PIN, without password and without code. With “Add a passkey”, a name and “Add”, your browser asks for your fingerprint, face or PIN. Passkeys work only over https, and only once your operator has entered the public address.
  • Sign-in provider: there only if your operator has set one up. “Link with …” lets you sign in both ways afterwards; your password confirms it is you. “Unlink” separates them again.
  • Signed-in devices: where you are signed in right now, with device, browser, rough network and last use. “Sign out” signs a single device out, “Sign out everywhere else” ends all but this one.
My account
My account, tab Security: the card “Second factor” with eight recovery codes left, the card “Passkeys” with one passkey “Laptop”, and “Signed-in devices” with Firefox on Windows and Safari on iPhone
Second factor, passkeys and the list of your devices.

The card “Signed-in devices” also holds the switch “Tell me about a new sign-in”, on out of the box. If someone signs in to your account in a browser nexdiary does not know yet, you get a message on your phone and, if your account has a mail address and your server sends mail, an email. It names the device, the browser, roughly where from, and when. A tap on the message opens this card. If it was not you, sign the device out there and change your password.

Look

  1. Choose a colour

“Themes” offers five: “Sage”, nexdiary's own colour, “Terracotta”, “Plum”, “Dusty rose” and “Ink”. Each shows on the left how it looks by day, on the right in the evening.

  2. Light or dark

“Like the system” is preselected and follows your device. “Light” and “Dark” fix it.

  3. On the phone

“Start with the quick note” is on: when you open nexdiary on your phone, you land right in the text field.

  4. Choose the layout

For the layout of “Today” there are “Day page”, “Two columns” and “Like a chat”. Under “Journal layout” you choose between “Blog” and “Timeline”.

My account, tab Look: the five themes Sage, Terracotta, Plum, Dusty rose and Ink, each by day and in the evening, and below “Light or dark” with “Like the system”
Five colours, each for the day and the evening.

What is not here

You cannot delete your account yourself. The operator does that for you, and it goes with everything that belongs to it. If you have forgotten your password, the operator sends you a link with which you choose a new one; where your server sends mail and your account has a mail address, “Forgot your password?” on the sign-in page does it too.

Good to knowPrint the recovery codes or copy them out by hand and keep them with your papers. If the phone is gone, one of them gets you back in, without anybody having to reset anything.
