Writing · Chapter 9
Values, tags and “Just briefly today”
A day cannot be caught in numbers, but a few numbers help when you look back. In nexdiary you give a day values from 1 to 10, for mood or sleep say, and add tags. Both are optional. And for evenings when nothing more is possible, there is “Just briefly today”.
Rating the day
On “Today” you find the block “How was your day?”, marked “optional”. Each value has a row from 1 to 10, with its two ends below, such as “awful” and “great”. Tap a number and it is saved. Tap the same number again and the rating is gone.
You give values on “Today”, for the current day. They cannot be added later for an earlier day.
From the start nexdiary asks for “Mood”, “Health”, “Sleep” and “Work day”. A fifth value, “Relationship”, is already there but switched off. The first value in your order that is switched on is your main value. The statistics and “Just briefly today” go by it.
Values of your own
- Open the card
Under “My account”, “Writing” tab, you find the card “My values”.
- Add a value
At the bottom, under “A value of your own”, enter a name, such as sport, headaches or time with the kids, and tap “Add”.
- Set it up
The pencil beside it opens “Edit value”. There you change the name under “Name”, decide what “1 means” and what “10 means”, and write a “Hint”, such as Last night. “Move up” and “Move down” change the order.
- Switch it on or off
The switch beside a value decides whether nexdiary asks for it on “Today”. Deleting is done in the window “Edit value”. Whatever you entered on earlier days stays with those days.
You can have up to 30 values. Names, ends and hints are stored encrypted just like your pages. Nobody else sees your values unless you deliberately include them when you share a day.
Tags
Tags are short keywords for a day, such as family, outdoors or holiday. You use them to filter the journal, they show up in the statistics, and they influence which cover nexdiary suggests. With holiday it tends to be the beach, with work the town.
- Tap “Tag” with the plus sign
The button is in the block “Tags” on “Today” and in the writing view beside the text.
- Pick one or write your own
Tap one of the suggestions, or type your own under “Your own tag” and tap “Add”.
- Remove it again
A chosen tag sits as a small label on the day. Tapping it takes it away.
A day can have up to 30 tags, each up to 40 characters long.
Just briefly today
Some days nothing more is possible. So that they do not stay empty, a day without notes shows a link below the card “Write the day up”, such as “Just briefly today: Mood and one sentence”.
- Tap the link
The window “Just briefly today” opens.
- A value and a sentence
Under “How was the day?” pick your main value, and under “One sentence about it” write one sentence, such as “Chestnuts with Mia, otherwise just tired.”
- Save
“Save” makes today's page, with the cover already chosen. If the sentence is short enough, it becomes the title as well.
The short day counts towards your streak, your weekly goal and the statistics, but it earns no shield. The link exists only for today, and only while the day has no notes, no page and no draft. The sentence can be up to 280 characters long.
Good to knowA short day can become more later. Open it in the journal like any other day and carry on writing with “Edit”.
