Remembering and sharing · Chapter 13

Streak, writing goal and shields

The small flame at the top of “Today” counts how long you have kept going. How strictly it counts is up to you: every day, or a few times a week. And when a day slips by, a shield catches it without you having to press anything.

What the streak counts

It counts pages. A day counts as soon as it has a page with text, whether you wrote it yourself or had the AI write it up. Notes on their own do not count yet. The short page from “Just briefly today”, with one value and one sentence, does count. A draft the AI wrote by itself in the morning counts only once you have taken it with “Accept”.

If you only write yesterday's page today, it still counts for yesterday. nexdiary works the streak out afresh from your pages each time, and a page written later stands on its own date.

You see the streak in three places: at the top of “Today”, in the quick note and under “Statistics”. There the tile “Streak” also says “already written today” or “today is still open”, next to the “Longest streak”. After you save a page, nexdiary says something like “Saved. Day 12 in a row.”

Setting your writing goal

Out of the box the streak counts days in a row; the goal is every day. If that is too much, set it lower.

  1. Open your account

Through the round account button, at the bottom of the sidebar on a computer, top right on a phone, then “My account” and the tab “Writing”.

  2. The card “Writing goal”

The slider “How often do you want to write?” runs from “1 time a week” to “7 times a week, so every day”.

  3. Let go

It is saved the moment you let go of the slider. nexdiary adds: “Your streak is counted again with the new goal.” So it is worked out over your whole history by the new rule.

GoalHow the streak counts
7 times a weekdays in a row, shown as “12 days”
1 to 6 timesweeks in a row (Monday to Sunday) in which you reached your goal, whichever days you wrote on; with something like “2 of 4 this week”

The week that is running breaks nothing while your goal can still be reached in it. If you aimed for four pages and it is Thursday with two written, everything is still open.

Shields catch a missed day

At goal 7 a shield saves a missed day; with a smaller goal it saves a week you missed. It is used on its own, you do nothing. A saved day or week holds the streak together but does not count into it.

  • For keeping at it: a shield for every 10 days in a row (goal 7), or for every 4 weeks in a row that reached the goal (goal 1 to 6).
  • For a long page: a shield for an entry of 300 words or more, at most one a week.

A small shield with a number next to the flame shows how many you have, as long as you have one. There is no upper limit, and no switch to turn shields off. If they ever run short, the streak breaks and the shields go with it. Under “Statistics” the last rescues then read “Streak saved on …”, or with a weekly goal “Streak saved in the week of …”. The short page from “Just briefly today” keeps the streak but earns no shield.

Statistics
Statistics with the tiles Streak (56 days, today is still open, 5 shields), Longest streak, Days 2026 and Words, the card “Looking back” with “Last week” and “Last month”, and the calendar “Your half year”
A streak with five shields in reserve.

A reminder before the week slips

Under “My account”, “Reminders” there is the switch “Remind me when my weekly goal is in danger”, off out of the box. With it on, a message comes at your chosen time when you have not written today and the days left in the week only just suffice for your goal, such as “2 more entries for your weekly goal.” How reminders reach your phone is in the chapter Reminders.

Good to knowIf every day is too much, set the goal to three or four. Then the streak counts weeks, and an evening on the sofa without the diary breaks nothing.
